Think about independent music coming from Canada today and the words “epic”, “collective”, “hushed” and maybe even “orchestral” will come to mind. The words “energetic”, “psychedelic”, and “seizure” certainly do not come to mind. That is, until you hear Toronto’s DD/MM/YYYY. Loosely centered around a psychedelic punk sound but mostly unclassifiable, they call upon such touchstones as Captain Beefheart, early Soft Machine, and the unbridled energy of bands such as At the Drive In.
After releasing two albums in Canada, they hit the road in a big way this year, crossing America in a van and playing with such trendy acts as the Blood Brothers and Dan Deacon. Plans are even being made to release their music in the UK, through the Golden Lab label. If things do work out, Britain can look forward to a healthy dose of complex and catchy rhythms, buzzing synth lines, splinters of guitar, and lyrics that are usually about Mr. T and the Olsen twins.
